The Sports Bag: The CYO Spring and Summer Indoor/Outdoor Basketball League is still being registered; Susanna Weir Receives Prestigious Runway Award & More

The CYO Spring Summer 2022 Indoor/Outdoor Basketball League still accepting registration for boys’ and girls’ teams for divisions 3rd through 8th grade, as well as a separate high school division entering in September. There will be no individual registrations, only teams.

The Youth Division breakdown includes three divisions, including Grades 3-4 (14-minute halves), Grades 5-6 (15-minute halves), and Grades 7-8 (16-minute halves) ) for boys and girls.

The registration fee is $250 per team and the official fee is $40 per game.

The secondary division registration fee is $300 per team and the official fee is $45 per game.

The high school division includes all grades for girls and a separate breakdown of grades 9, 10, and 11 for boys.

The two-league season will run from May 31 to July 28, and games will be played Monday through Thursday. The playoffs will begin after July 28. Matches will be played at CYO-MIV, as well as other venues.

The deadline to register is May 26. There will be a $50 officials fee to be paid in advance. You can play in teams of separate divisions and the teams must use their own uniforms (T-shirts, reversible with number on the back).

Notre Dame Academy track and cross-country product Susanna Weir received one of Delaware’s prestigious Hennies Awards, as she recently won the Mary Ann Hitchens Award.

The award has been presented annually since 2007 to an outstanding senior UD student-athlete “who has demonstrated the qualities of hard work, dedication, leadership, fairness and pursuit of excellence that have characterized the Hitchens’ career.

The Blue Hens graduate student had a distinguished career in cross country and indoor and outdoor athletics, which earned her the award.

Most recently, in the 2021-22 indoor season, she opened the campaign with a time of 16:49.62 (43rd place) in the 500 meters in season opener Sharon Colyear-Danville, who placed second in school history.

Wagner College to host youth soccer camp

The Wagner College football program will host a youth camp July 25-28.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon daily and is open to children ages 8-13.

The cost of the camp is $160 per player.
