NEW ULM – New Ulm VFW Silver head coach Mark Grossmann has said he believes his team played an overall decent game in their knockout game against Mankato West on Saturday at Johnson Park.
Sadly, two costly Silver mistakes potentially cost them three points as they fell to West 8-5.
The loss ends Silver’s season at 13-17.
Logan Mielke took the loss for Silver.
Mielke, Parker Kamm and Kaden Wilson each had two hits, with Mieke’s two hits being doubles.
He also had three RBIs.
Money beat Mankato 12-10.
“We made those mistakes, but other than that we hit the ball well with 11 hits,” said Grossmann. “But we had three online outings that cost us three points. They took advantage of our mistakes. I felt the kids were working really hard – they fought to the end. It was a game where you lose, but you are proud of what happened.
New Ulm fell behind 5-0 after two innings but recovered.
A single Matt Seidl RBI in the third reduced the lead to 5-1.
But a late-inning double play on a hard-hit ball ended the threat.
The silver closed with two runs in the top of the sixth when they added two more runs on a Wilson single and a Mielke double. A single from Kamm made it 5-3 before another late-inning murder of a twin ended the inning.
“It’s the little things that at the end of the game give you momentum”, Grossmann spoke about double play. “It’s the little things that kill a team.”
