Jr NBA Basketball League registrations begin at Veterans Park rec | News, Sports, Jobs



Local youth will have the opportunity to participate in the NBA Junior Basketball League at the Veterans Park Recreation Center this summer.

The Jr. NBA Basketball League, in partnership with Lee County Parks & Recreation, will host a Summer Basketball League from June 11 through July 31.

Registration is now open for children aged 5 to 14.

The Jr. NBA is the official NBA youth basketball participation program and is open to all levels.

“The Jr. NBA is for boys and girls who are new to the game and at all skill levels. Our goal is to help them develop a lifelong passion for basketball by teaching them the fundamental principles of the sport while instilling in them core values ​​such as teamwork, respect and sportsmanship,” says Coach Quran Pettyjohn.

Pettyjohn or Coach Q as he is better known is also the head basketball coach of the new Gateway High School. In his freshman season, he recently helped Gateway’s freshman men’s team advance to a district championship.

The J. NBA Basketball League will host all program practices and games on Saturdays and Sundays inside the gymnasium at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, 55 Homestead Road South, Lehigh Acres.

“During the summer program we will cover the basics of the game, including: how to dribble; shoot, layout and play in a proper team environment,” Coach Q said. “Each team will have between 7 and 10 players in each team. Each age group will have a 2 hour window for practices, followed by a game to put into play what they have learned.

Registration is $60 per participant. There is also a $10 individual membership requirement to participate.

Practices and games will be held at the Veterans Park Recreation Center gymnasium, 55 Homestead Road S., on Saturdays and Sundays.

Boys and girls will learn the basics of sport, while instilling core values ​​such as teamwork, respect and sportsmanship.

Supervisor Rebecca Flora said she was registering 40 children per age group. Groups will be made up of children 5-6 years old; 7-8 years old; 9-10 years old; 11-12 years old and 13-14 years old.

5-10 year olds will practice and play games on Saturday with 5-6 year olds playing 9:30-11:30; 7-8 year olds from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 9-10 year olds from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday 11 and 12 year olds will play from 12:30 p.m.

Flora said there will be nine to 10 players per team and they will train and play their game for the time allotted to their age group. The first game will start on June 25.

She said they were also looking for 20 volunteer coaches to help the league.
