Humphery Edobor Gabriel has been selected from the promotion for the 2022 Taiwan Professional Basketball League Draft. The Nigerian played a huge role in his Vanung University side finishing in 4th place at UBA 2022 after a 90-76 loss in the 3rd place game on Sunday.
Gabe (Humphery Gabriel) and his teammate Zhang Jiewei (Jay West) as well as NCCU center Ding Andi, are three foreign students who have been selected for the draft to enter the professional framework.
Xu Zhichao thinks Gabe is a very good striker with a height advantage and a smooth shot. Ding Andi has excellent explosive power. Can improve the team’s penalty area.
Being their final year at UBA and as graduate students, the trio are no longer eligible to play in college basketball and can therefore continue their careers by moving to the professional league.
Vanung head coach Wu Fengsheng (Banisim) said that Zhang Jiewei and Gabe will continue to train with the team and hold trials for them with a professional team to test. “Both have potential, but their sophistication and experience will need to be honed as they prepare for the professional league,” he said.
Taiwan has three professional leagues and drafts allowing players to advance to one of the leagues will take place in May. Meanwhile, according to Ryan Shih, Humphery Gabriel’s manager, the Nigerian has been linked with SBL’s Jaeotai Technology and the Nigerian striker has agreed to personal terms pending medicals and other formalities.
“There’s a lot of interest in Gabe now, but we’re looking for one who would have a long-term benefit to his career,” Ryan said. “It’s good to see him in the draft, but Jaeotai Technology looks promising and we could close the deal in the next few days well before the draft,” he postulated.
